Creative Media Arts
SPECIALIST SCHOOL STATUS
Media Arts Specialism
Since obtaining Specialist Status in 2004 our continued aim has been to improve the quality of teaching and learning across the curriculum and hence standards of achievement within the school. The Specialism focuses on ways in which media technology and moving images can illuminate and enhance all areas of the curriculum, helping to raise engagement and achievement levels. We encourage and implement the use of moving image work in most subject areas by providing staff with resources and technical support as and when required.
Community
Ryburn has strong community links and undertakes a wide range of media projects every year, some of which have been recognised nationally, e.g. BBC News Day/Road Safety Campaign.
Creative/Media Arts Faculty
Currently all students from Years 7 – 9 take Art, Drama, Dance and Media. Drama, Music, Art, Performing Arts, Media Studies and Film Studies are available as GCSE options to all students. Pupils that prefer a more practical approach to learning can select from the BTEC's on offer in Art, Dance, Drama, Media and Performing Arts.
Post 16 students may choose to follow WJEC Media Studies at ‘A’ and ‘A/S’ Level, WJEC Film Studies at ‘A’ and ‘A/S’ Level, Edexcel Performing Arts at ‘A’ and ‘A/S’ Level and Level 3 Extended Project (CMD) and level 1 and level 3 BTEC Creative Media Production.
The Creative/Media Arts subjects are highly popular and successful within the school and each year a wide variety of exhibitions, showcases, concerts and soirees are organised throughout the faculty.
An annual Music production and two serious plays are produced each year. Students are encouraged to perform, design, direct, film and produce on a regular basis both in and out of school.
An important shared aim within the 'Faculty' is the desire to encourage our students to explore the links between the Creative/Media Arts and to deepen their understanding of other curriculum areas such as History, English and Religious Education. We believe that the Arts have a unique position as their subject matter is of necessary cross-curricula.
