Starting big school is a big deal! New students are made to feel so welcome at Ryburn. You'll be settled in no time.
A DAY AT RYBURN
This video has been produced by our Year 7 Student Council, especially for new students. One year ago we were in your position; full of excitement and worries about moving from our small, friendly primary schools to a big secondary school. We want to welcome you to Ryburn and tell you not to worry!
HOW WE SUpport new students
in primary schools
We reach out to pupils in Year 6 to help them know what to expect when they get to Ryburn, and to make sure they recognise at least a few of the new faces when they start.
A team of Ryburn teachers and students visit our feeder primary schools in the summer term. In July we have a welcome and information evening for all new families, and all our new pupils come to Ryburn for a transition day in July where they will meet their form group and tutor, and get a taster of lessons and a day in the life of school. Our current Year 7 pupils play a big part in welcoming the new students.
As a welcome gesture, we give every new student a copy of the book 'You are Awesome' by Matthew Syed to read over the summer. Helping us all discover our amazing potential and how to make the most of it, this is a great book to set the tone for beginning at Ryburn. Students complete a project over the summer exploring the themes of the book and share it with their new classmates in September.
The big day arrives, and we are really looking forward to welcoming our new Year 7s. For the first two weeks, each form is looked after by student Transition Leaders, who help them find all the right classrooms and make sure they know what they are doing. Four weeks in, we hold a Settling in Evening for Year 7 families, when you will get chance to chat to form tutors and find out about Camp. You'll be amazed how quickly you settle in!
Packed with videos, interactive games, and tips and advice, BBC Bitesize’s Starting Secondary School will help children across the UK during their last term in primary school and through their first weeks at secondary school. It’s aimed at 10 to 12 year olds, parents and teachers and designed to help support them beginning secondary school.
There’s lots of really great content including advice from the stars of CBBC series Our School who have first hand experience of making the move to secondary school. And for parents there’s plenty of practical tips on how to prepare your child. Well worth checking out.
