Character Education Research Project

A group of year nine Ryburn students tackled the thorny issue of cyber-wisdom this term in a pilot lesson that will form part of the school’s contribution to a leading university research project.

We will be running the specially developed character education lessons from October in conjunction with a research project run by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues at Birmingham University.

The Jubilee Centre is a pioneering research organisation focussing on character, virtues and values and their importance for public and professional life and is a leading body on policy and practice in this area. Character education has always been a huge part of what Ryburn is about, so we’re really excited about working with them and contributing to research on this important topic.

Our students were challenged with a range of social and moral dilemmas in a digital setting - such as what would you do if you had the opportunity to copy homework that is handed in online - and were encouraged to discuss and share their responses openly and honestly. We were so proud of their confidence, openness and maturity in discussing some complex topics.

Ryburn already holds the Character Kitemark Plus - one of only a small number of schools to do so - and the development of character and personal confidence is at the heart of our curriculum and ex-curricular provision.
