What Parents and Carers Need to Know about World of Warcraft.

National Online Safety has released a new guide for parents and carers. This week’s content is focused on the popular online game, ‘World of Warcraft’, and what parents and carers need to know.

World of Warcraft was originally launched in 2004 and since then it only continued to grow and rise in popularity. In November 2022, the game released its ninth major expansion, ‘Dragonflight’. This release brought a mass of lapsed players back to the game, and attracted new ones.

As with a lot of online games, there are in-game purchases and the game actually requires a subscription to play. Being exclusively an online game means that students can access both voice and text chat functions, both of which pose potential risks such as verbal harassment or trolling.

National Online Safety have an. expanded list of features and risks involved, but also offer ways to mitigate these. The game has a free trial option so that you can try before you buy, there are ways parents and children can play together and you can manage playtime by offering it as a reward.
