A letter to Year 6 parents and carers

Welcome to Ryburn

Mrs O Leary

My name is Mrs O’Leary and I will be your child’s Head of Year throughout their time at Ryburn Valley High School. I will be working with my Assistant Head of Year and a team of ten Year 7 form tutors to look after your child’s wellbeing as well as helping them reach their potential. I am sure you and your child are looking forward to September and hoping that the transition to ‘big school’ goes as smoothly as possible.

May/June would be the time we would visit your child’s primary school to talk about Ryburn and answer any questions and concerns they may have. Year 6 would also visit us on a transition day in July where they would get to meet their form tutor.  Unfortunately, we are currently living in somewhat difficult and unpredictable times and we are unable to plan these events with any certainty.

However, I urge you and your child not to panic! We are determined to make your child’s transition as smooth as possible so that they feel happy, comfortable and prepared ready for their start in September.

Here’s what we have planned for your virtual transition programme:

  • A series of information videos helping you get ready for September, including meeting the Year 7 team, learning your way around school, and all the practical things you need to know about life at Ryburn.

  • Chance to ask Ryburn students your questions or worries about starting school. Send us these through our Starting Ryburn page by 31 May, and our Ambassadors Will and Connie will answer them in a special episode of Radio Ryburn, our student podcast.

  • A welcome evening, run virtually and streamed live. This is when families are invited to tune in to Facebook or Instagram live and will be able to meet their form tutor and have the opportunity to listen to talks from our Head Teacher, myself and the student Ambassadors.  You will receive more information about this event in due course.

  • Your induction booklet and information about your form and classmates will be sent via post the week commencing 6 July.

All of the important information that we would usually discuss in our transition visits will be available to you and your child on our Starting Ryburn page and will be available to view on both our school Facebook and Instagram pages. This will appear bit by bit, starting from the start of June.

Strong links between home and school are vital. We see you as our partners in your child’s education and development. Together, we can encourage your child to make the most of their opportunities, enabling them to become confident, happy, aspiring young people. Please do check out the website and social media links above to keep in touch with the latest news.

In the meantime, if you have any queries or concerns, feel free to contact myself by email at g.oleary@rvhschool.co.uk or Mr Clarke at r.clarke@rvhschool.co.uk.
