Winning writers

Well done to Aidan O'Neill in Year 7, who won the Calderdale 500 Words Writing Competition for his short story "In the Trenches". Elsa Harrad in Year 8 was also Highly Commended. We're so proud of them both.

The local competition, run to coordinate with the national Radio 2 500 Words competition, encourages children to show off their creative flair in an original short story on any subject. Sally Tetlow from Calderdale Council came into Ryburn on Monday to congratulate Aidan and Elsa and presented them with their prize book tokens in front of a group of their classmates, along with Aidan's English Teacher Mr Virot, and our Literacy Coordinator Miss Keating.

We're told it is a rare occurrence to have both prize winners from the same school, so well done to our fabulous English Department.

We've just heard that Aidan's story has also made it through to the second round of the national competition, along with less than 4% of the 131,798 stories entered. Amazing!

You'll have chance to read Aidan's award-winning story in the next issue of Ryburn's school magazine, coming soon.
