National Online Safety - Encouraging Open Discussion About Our Digital Lives

Encouraging Open Discussion About Our Digital Lives.

National Online Safety has released a new guide for parents and carers. This week’s content includes tips for parents and carers on having discussions with children about their digital lives.

Most children are asked about their days at school and how things are going with their friendship groups, but it can be difficult to broach the topic of the digital lives of young people, even though it is a much more commonplace part of their lives now. There are many positives such as being another space for them to connect and interact with their friends, and research and learn about topics of interest. However, being online also has its risks and it’s important to discuss these with children.

As such, National Online Safety has put together some tips for parents and carers on how to talk to children about their lives online. Go into the discussion with enthusiasm - many children enjoy teaching adults about their interests. Let them know they can always talk to you and be honest and open with them appropriate to their age.
